Implied music is what is
felt, but not necessarily heard.
The idea is the result of the lack of a traditional rhythm
section: Original MiLkBabY
member Jason Kunesh wanted a bassist, someone to hold down a line around
which he could play. After
Jason left the band, and after the band experimented with a bassist, as a
quartet, and as a quintet, it occurred to the core of the band that what
they had gotten used to was playing to an implied bass, giving them the
freedom and ease to play poly-rhythmically without the dreaded need to
count, thereby preserving the organic feel to which they had also become
accustomed. Moreover, implied
music is that which is represented in the music itself, and heard in any
music in which the listener uses his or her imagination to allow it to exist. This doesnÕt mean that the players
donÕt have to listen to one another.
On the contrary. It is
equally important for the actors to listen to each other, regardless of the
space, and allow implication to arise out of what is being heard, in order
to discover what is actually being said.
